WMUK Buddy Service

Bringing people with WM together for peer-to-peer support

We understand how important it is to be able to share experiences with other WMers, and there may be times when one-to-one support might be particularly beneficial, such as for those newly diagnosed with WM or a related condition, or those starting treatment. WMUK’s Buddy Service is designed to help you feel heard, understood, and less alone.

Sometimes, the most reassuring support comes from someone who truly understands what you’re going through. The WMUK Buddy Service connects people living with the rare cancer Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinaemia (WM) with buddies who have shared similar experiences.

What is the Buddy Service?

The WMUK Buddy Service matches people seeking one-to-one peer support with volunteer Buddies who are also living with WM. It’s a chance to speak to someone who has walked a similar path and understands what it’s like to live with a rare cancer. Buddies are not medical professionals or counsellors – they are simply people like you who want to offer a listening ear and share their experiences. Conversations can take place via email or phone, depending on what you feel most comfortable with. Each Buddy pairing is intended to provide support over the short term; Buddies can offer up to 8 contact sessions across 3 months.

Request Support from a WMUK Buddy

Who can request a Buddy?

Currently the service is open to those who meet one or more of the below criteria:

  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of WM or LPL,
    and
  • Received a formal diagnosis less than 12 months ago
    OR
  • Have started a new treatment within the last 6 months
    OR
  • Have been diagnosed with a related condition within the last 6 months (e.g. amyloidosis, Bing Neel Syndrome, cold agglutinin disease, etc.)
    OR
  • whose WM has transformed into another type of cancer

If you don’t meet one or more of those criteria, our Support Team can still guide you to other options, like our peer-led Support Groups or Coffee and Chat sessions. Visit the WM Support Centre for more information.

What you can expect:

  • Support from a volunteer who can share their personal experience of living with WM/LPL
  • Being matched with someone with similar experiences
  • Support over the phone or by email
  • Short-term peer support – 8 contacts over a 3 month period
  • No obligation to complete all the sessions – if at any time you don’t feel the service is right for you, you can end your participation

What NOT to expect:

  • Medical advice or psychological support – Buddies are volunteers and not trained medical professionals so they cannot provide medical advice, mental health/psychological support, counselling or a befriending service.

If you are in acute emotional distress, please phone the Samaritans’ free helpline on 116 123, NHS 111 or contact your GP who can provide more specialised support.
  • Long-term support – the service is set up to support 3 months’ of support between you and your Buddy and the contact will end after this time
  • Regional support – you will be matched based on your experiences, not where you live
  • Face-to-face support – all contacts will be by phone or email
  • 24-hour support – Buddies are volunteers and are also living with WM, therefore they won’t be available at all times. When you’re first matched with your Buddy, they’ll let you know what times of day they can chat
  • Immediate or urgent support – our Buddy’s might be supporting more than one person and so it may take a few weeks for us to match you with someone

If you are unable to complete the form for any reason, please contact our Support Line on 0300 373 8500 or support@wmuk.org.uk so that we can assist you.
