What are lymphocytes?

Lymphocytes

Lymphocytes is the collective name for a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in your body’s defence system. They help your body fight disease and infection, and are an important part in giving you immunity.

They circulate in the bloodstream and are concentrated in lymphoid tissues such as the spleen, tonsils, and lymph nodes, where they initiate immune responses. If you have had an infection before, your lymphocytes will quickly recognise and fight that infection again.

There are three types of lymphocyte: B-cells (B Lymphocytes), T-cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. In people with WM, the B-cells (or B lymphocytes) develop incorrectly.

With a diagnosis of Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinaemia, you may be coming across new and unfamiliar words. Look them up in our WM glossary below.
