Vitamin D keeps the bones, teeth and muscles healthy. We get most of our vitamin D from sunlight – the body creates the vitamin when we’re outside. However, between October and March, we do not have enough sunlight to produce healthy quantities.
It is even more important to take a vitamin D supplement if you are in the clinically extremely vulnerable category, and have been spending more time indoors during the spring and summer this year.
The UK Government is recommending that everybody should take vitamin D supplements during the autumn and winter months. People living in England, in the clinically extremely vulnerable category (you will have received a letter from the government to let you know that you are at high risk), will be eligible to register for a free 4-month supply of vitamin D.
As some health conditions, including certain types of cancer, can lead to high levels of calcium, vitamin D supplements may not be suitable for everyone. Our WM specialists have advised us that the risk of high calcium levels is very low in Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinaemia (WM), and therefore do not consider this concern applicable to patients with WM.
As always, if you have any concerns, we would advise that you speak with your clinical team or GP before opting into this scheme.
To register online for the scheme. You will need to provide some details, including your 10-digit NHS number, which you will be able to find on the letter from the DHSC.
The deadline for registration is 4 January 2021.
